GAME RECAP......... Game Of the Week
|
SPORTING / SAPPERTON march 13
Sporting 1 Sapperton 2 Sporting ran up against a determined Sapperton squad on Saturday, as the Rovers were desperate for points to avoid relegation and keep their chances at Provincial Cup qualification alive. The injury bug has bit Sporting in the last few weeks, and as a result the team went into the game undermanned. With attacking midfielders Steve Frazao and Ryan Dormer on the shelf with lower body injuries, the team also had to adjust to their first game in the new year without keeper Alex Marques, who has returned to his duties as netminder for the Vancouver Whitecaps. The first half provided few scoring chances as both teams engaged in a defensive battle, which was a stark contrast from the 5-3 shootout these two engaged in the second round of Imperial Cup action. Denny Ferreria made a case for the Chunger of the Year award with his thunderous - but clean - slidetackle on Sapperton midfielder Mike Favaro. This was probably the most noteworthy incident of the first half.
